ARI maintains a comprehensive safety program which conforms to the dictates of 29CFR1910 (Occupational Exposures to Hazardous Chemical in Laboratories). The safety program is described in the Chemical Hygiene Plan. ARI subscribes to, and actively enforces, all of the safety program elements specified therein. Program emphases include guidelines and requirements for:
- Standard operating procedures relative to safety and health
- Selection and use of protective clothing and equipment
- Air flow testing
- Medical consultation and exams
- Employee safety training
- Laboratory hygiene
- Hazard identification and labeling
- Handling hazardous materials
- Respirator fitting and use
- Fire prevention and response
- Chemical storage
- Spill mitigation
- Laboratory waste handling
- Exposure monitoring
- Safety equipment maintenance
- First aid training
- Accident and spills reporting
ARI's safety program is administered by the Laboratory Manager. Various members of the laboratory staff are trained to handle responsibilities of the safety program, including respirator fitting/maintenance, hood air-flow testing, first-aid training, etc. ARI's safety program is coordinated with the local Fire Department and Hazmat Team.
The handling and disposal of residual samples and chemicals is assigned to the ARI Hazmat Coordinator, a senior-level chemist, who provides for the consolidation, testing and transfer of these materials to a local, certified waste chemical disposal company. Detailed records of handling and transfer are maintained on site. The Hazmat Coordinator also provides for personnel training in spill cleanup, hazardous materials handling, and packaging for transport.
